How Astrology Influences Relationships
Why Some Bonds Are Written in the Stars — and How to Heal the Ones That Are Not

“Every relationship in your life — every love, every conflict, every unspoken longing — is reflected in your birth chart. Nothing happens by accident.” — R.H. Soni Guruji
The Cosmic Roots of Human Connection
Why do some people enter your life and feel like home, while others, despite every effort, remain strangers? Why does one marriage flourish for decades while another dissolves in months? Why does a parent and child who love each other deeply still cause each other such profound pain?
These are not random accidents. They are karmic conversations — and Vedic Astrology has been reading them for millennia. In my 41 years of practice, relationship questions are the most common, the most painful, and the most transformative work I do with clients. Because relationships are where our karma is most visible, most felt, and most urgently in need of healing.
The Planets That Govern Your Relationships
In Vedic Astrology, specific planets and houses directly shape your relationship patterns:
Venus — the planet of love
Venus governs romantic attraction, beauty, harmony, and emotional intimacy. Its placement in your chart reveals how you love, what you are attracted to, and what you need to feel cherished. A strong Venus brings magnetic charm and deep romantic capacity. An afflicted Venus can create patterns of heartbreak, unavailability, or materialism in love.
The 7th house — the house of partnership
The 7th house is the most direct indicator of marriage and long-term partnership. The planets occupying or aspecting this house, and its ruling planet’s condition, reveal the nature of your partnerships — whether they bring growth or conflict, whether marriage comes early or late, and what kind of partner your soul is calling in.
The Moon — the planet of emotional bonding
The Moon governs your emotional needs, how you nurture and receive nurturing, and your relationship with your mother — the first relationship that forms the template for all others. Moon compatibility between two people is often the deciding factor in whether a relationship feels emotionally safe or perpetually unsettled.
Mars — the planet of passion and conflict
Mars brings fire to relationships — passion, desire, and decisive action on the positive side; anger, aggression, and impulsiveness on the challenging side. Mars’s placement in both partners’ charts, and especially its relationship to Mangal Dosha, is critical in assessing long-term harmony.
Kundli Matching: The Science Behind Compatibility
The Vedic tradition of Kundli Milan — birth chart compatibility analysis — is not a ritual formality. It is a precise tool for assessing the karmic alignment between two souls before they commit to a shared life journey.
In traditional Kundli matching, 36 Gunas (qualities) are assessed across eight categories:
• Varna: spiritual compatibility
• Vasya: mutual attraction and control
• Tara: birth star compatibility
• Yoni: physical and temperamental compatibility
• Graha Maitri: planetary friendship and mental harmony
• Gana: nature and temperament match
• Bhakoot: family health and prosperity
• Nadi: genetic and health compatibility
A score of 18 or above out of 36 is generally considered compatible. But in my practice, I always go beyond the Guna score. Two charts with 28 points can still be deeply troubled if Mars, Saturn, or Rahu are powerfully afflicting the 7th house. And two charts with 16 points can create a deeply nourishing partnership if the planets align in complementary ways.
✨ Guruji’s Insight The number score is a starting point, not the final answer. Read the whole chart. The planets tell the complete story.
Mangal Dosha: The Most Misunderstood Relationship Warning
No topic generates more fear in relationship astrology than Mangal Dosha. When Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of a birth chart, it creates what is known as Manglik Dosha — a Mars affliction believed to cause tension, conflict, or instability in marriage.
But I want to say clearly, as I always do: Mangal Dosha is not a curse. It is a signal. Mars in these houses means that this person carries intense energy, strong will, and a powerful need for autonomy within relationships. They need a partner who can match their fire — not be consumed by it.
The remedy is not fear. It is awareness. Specific puja, mantra practice, and in some cases, remedial gemstones (Red Coral for Mars) can significantly reduce the challenging expression of this placement and bring out Mars’s gifts: courage, passion, and determination.
Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu: The Deeper Relationship Karmas
Some of the most powerful relationship patterns are not about Venus at all. They come from Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu — the planets of karma and past-life debt.
• Saturn in the 7th house often creates delays in marriage, or a relationship that feels like hard work and duty more than joy. But it also creates deeply committed, enduring partnerships for those who do the inner work.
• Rahu in the 7th can bring intense, obsessive attraction followed by disillusionment — karmic relationships that teach through upheaval.
• Ketu in the 7th often indicates a soul who has been in partnership in many past lives and now needs to find completeness within themselves, which can make commitment feel elusive.
Understanding these placements does not doom a relationship. It explains it. And explanation is the first step to healing.
How to Use Astrology to Heal and Strengthen Relationships
Astrology gives you three powerful gifts in your relationship life: understanding, timing, and remedy.
Understanding reveals why a pattern keeps repeating — why you keep attracting unavailable partners, or why conflict in your home never seems to resolve. When you see it in your chart, it stops being your fault and starts being your karma — something to work with, not to be ashamed of.
Timing tells you when planetary periods are favouring love and partnership, and when they are testing it. Knowing you are in a difficult Venus or Saturn period does not mean giving up — it means being more patient, more intentional, and more conscious.
Remedy offers practical spiritual tools to correct the planetary imbalances affecting your relationships — specific mantras, gemstones, fasting days, and rituals tailored to your chart that shift the energy at the deepest level.
“Your partner is not the problem. Your karma is the conversation. Astrology helps you hear what that conversation is really saying.” — R.H. Soni Guruji
